Position Summary

The Executive Director, Intellectual Property will be responsible for developing the IP strategy for Arvinas’ Immuno-Oncology (I/O) and Neuroscience platforms. In this highly visible role, the Executive Director will counsel management on a variety of IP issues, including licensing transactions, due diligence investigations and adversarial patent office proceedings.

This position reports to the Vice President, Intellectual Property and can be located at our headquarters in New Haven, CT or work remotely from a location within the U.S.

Principal Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Work cross-functionally with scientific, regulatory and business stakeholders to develop and execute Orange Book strategies for clinical stage assets in the I/O and Neuroscience platforms.
  • Manage outside counsel and direct the prosecution of global patent portfolios.
  • Assess IP risk and perform freedom to operate analyses; formulate appropriate risk-mitigation strategies. Advise management and other stakeholders on the scope and nature of IP risk.
  • Work with Arvinas scientists to identify patentable subject matter and develop appropriate IP strategies for pre-clinical research programs.
  • Provide IP transactional support for licensing transactions and due diligence investigations.
  • Draft and negotiate IP related contracts.
  • Assist with IP related litigation and adversarial patent office proceedings as needed.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant experience as a patent practitioner, including at least 4 years as in-house IP counsel.
  • JD with admission to at least one state bar and registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Experience managing complex clinical and commercial stage small molecule IP portfolios.
  • Intimate familiarity with US and foreign IP law is required.
  • Experience with IP transactional work, including licensing and due diligence investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide practical IP advice to key stakeholders.
  • Experience managing and mentoring junior attorneys.
  • Experience with adversarial patent office proceedings, such as US IPR or EU opposition proceedings strongly preferred.
  • IP litigation experience, especially experience with the Hatch-Waxman Act, strongly preferred.

Education

  • JD and an advanced degree in chemistry, biology, or related field; Ph.D. strongly preferred.
  • Title and compensation will be considered based on experience.
