Overview

We are currently seeking a Design Engineer III (Additive Manufacturing) for our Park City, UT Location. This role will report directly to the Director of Design Engineering and work with the Project Engineer for Additive Manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing internal standards to produce additively manufactured parts, primarily using Laser Powder Bed Fusion, that satisfy aerospace quality requirements.
  • Develop and execute plans to characterize AM material physical and mechanical properties, to evaluate the quality of AM material and to test the quality of the AM produced parts.
  • Work with the design team, other Triumph Group sites, external partners and suppliers to adapt and optimize design models for the AM build process.
  • Play a leading role in the development, improvement and implementation of additive manufacturing processes into Triumph’s design and development efforts.
  • Exercise creativity, foresight, and judgment in conceiving, planning, developing, and delivering on designs of new products.
  • Create mechanical drawings for additively manufactured components within each application.
  • Perform engineering calculations to support design work, with knowledge of stress/strain, dynamics, kinematics, power transmission, etc.
  • Timely preparation of initial drafts of associated engineering documentation including but not limited to Analysis Reports, Failure Investigations Reports, project deliverable documents and Engineering Changes.
  • Work with manufacturing and operations to ensure a smooth transition from design to fully manufacturable, high-quality parts.
  • Be a continuous learner by maintaining technical knowledge and awareness of developments related to aircraft drive systems, Additive Manufacturing industry trends and design improvement opportunities.
  • Occasional travel is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or material science.
  • Two or more years of relevant design experience in gear design and mechanical system integration or in Laser Powder Bed Fusions/Selective Laser Melting production environment.
  • Professional knowledge of materials science, materials testing, metallurgy, fractography, destructive and non-destructive evaluation techniques for metals commonly used in aerospace applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of machine design elements: housings, gears, bearings, seals, splines, lubricants, material selection, etc.
  • Basic problem solving/analytical skills, demonstrating ingenuity and creativity.
  • Intermediate proficiency with CAD software is required.
  • Educational certificate in additive manufacturing fundamentals and practices from an educational institution or professional organization (ASTM, ASME, SME, etc.) is preferred.
  • Intermediate level understanding of and experience with AS13100 and AS9100D requirements for aircraft component design is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of formal Qualification Standards such as DO160, MIL-STD-810 and/or EUROCAE ED-14 is desirable.

  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing is required.
  • Experience with gear and powertrain design and analysis software tools is preferred.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated and able to demonstrate initiative.
  • The capability to work efficiently and accurately, with an attention to detail, and in a team environment.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
